Four Tips Every Designer and Fashion Event Planner Ought to Know About Fashion Week

We at Mannequin Madness have a unique “behind the scenes perspective” on what it takes for designers to be successful during the IMG-Mercedes Benz Fashion week. As one of the leading suppliers of mannequin rentals to the fashion community, we know that making a big impact at Fashion Week is NOT just about having having beautiful models wearing the latest fashions.

To be successful at NY Fashion week it is about doing something in addition to showing fashions on the models. You have to do something that will create a BUZZ to attract the attention of editors, photographers, retailers, stylists, bloggers and perhaps one day, even Anna Wintour herself.

Whether you are an emerging or established design house, these five tips will help you get noticed at “Fashion Week” in New York – or fashion week that have sprung up in other cities.

1. Fashion is big business, so it is no surprise that business publications write about the fashion week, not just  the fashion press. This article from Inc. magazine titled “8 Ideas for Rocking fashion week” has some great advice for designers, sponsors or fashion event planners.

2. If you are going to need ancillary items (props, mannequins, garment racks, steamers, signage, special lighting etc.) waiting until the last minute puts you at risk of not getting your first choice and having to make do with whatever is left over. Book as much as you can ahead of time – WAY ahead of time. Or else you might have to pay a rush fee. Or you not get what you want at all.

For example, we frequently run out of stock on our most popular mannequin rental items. Sometimes you can save money by booking ahead of time because some vendors (like us) will give you a discount if you book in advance. (An advance booking is a month, not two weeks and requires a non-refundable deposit)

3. Add a theatrical element to your fashion presentation. Everyone is displaying apparel so you have to do something that makes your apparel display different. When Allegri, an Italian outerwear brand, made its first appearance at New York Fashion Week last year, they created quite a sensation with their exhibit. They found a way to make a dramatic statement with generic egghead white mannequins.

Allegri accomplished this two ways. First they made a big presence using quantity  – they ordered 24 mannequins. And suspended above the mannequins was a “cloud” of their top selling umbrellas. The result was sensational.

4. Pair up with someone bigger than yourself. Just like when two celebrities date, the publicity they attract is much greater than what they would get individually, the same is true in the fashion world. Find a strategic partner. There are online resources like Stylecaster.com or USTrendy.com both of which were featured in Inc. Magazine as having clout at Fashion Week. (Their  niche is working with emerging designers.)

Your strategic partner can be a “thing” not a person or website. Large and small design houses have started using guerilla marketing tactics involving mobile trucks and cars to increase visibility of their brand, as described in this  NY Times article. (BTW, asking us to donate mannequins in exchange for publicity doesn’t fly)
