Periodically we feature on our blog eye-catching window displays created by freelance visual merchandisers. Why? Because freelancers typically work for small and mid-size retail stores who do not have the big budgets for props like the big retail chains. So they have to work a lot harder and make a little go a long way.

While we love looking at the holiday window displays featured on Display and Design Ideas which feature award winning holiday window displays from retailers such as Bergdorf’s, Barney’s, Macy’s, Tiffany’s etc. But because they have big budgets and a big staff of visual merchandisers, their window displays are out of reach for independent retailers to emulate.

Even Anthropologie, a chain that prides itself on using low-budget materials for props, has the manpower to execute making all those handmade pinecones, or to paint and glue a stack of boxes in the shape of a Christmas tree. It is a lot more challenging to create fabulous window displays when you have a limited budget AND a limited staff. And if the staff does not understand basic concepts of visual merchandising – which is different than just simply stacking goods in the window, what do you do?

That is where the freelance visual merchandiser comes in. Since so many of our customers are independent retailers we like to feature window displays on our blog to give you ideas of what is possible on a limited budget. And we are building a database of freelance visual merchandisers that we can refer to retailers in any city.

This blog features Xmas holiday windows created by Keith Dillion a freelance visual merchandiser in the Los Angeles area.

Needless to say, we are biased – we like window displays that have mannequins in them – regardless of the product being sold. Mannequins are not just for clothing stores – as you will see in our future blog posts.
